Emily Brunsen, PhD

Dr. Brunsen holds a PhD in Human Factors Psychology from NC State and BAs in Psychology and Studio Arts from the University of Iowa. Her research interests include accessibility, vulnerable road users, and older driver safety. During her graduate studies,  Dr. Brunsen was a board member for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Ethics Task Force and is a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in research. Dr. Brunsen's work as a Human Factors researcher has involved collaborating with children with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) and other visual impairments to assist with technology modifications and training. Currently, she is leading a project to update NHTSA's Adapting Motor Vehicles For People With Disabilities guide to better serve its intended users. She is also managing a project that is using advanced data acquisition systems (DAS) to gather extensive data—such as multi-channel video, driver behavior, vehicle kinematics, and GPS traces from 200 participants to evaluate the impact of L2 systems on driving safety. Dr. Brunsen hosted DARTS 2024 and is excited to host DARTS 2025 and additional Topic Area Meetings in 2025!
